I'm Running a Marathon?
So, you might be wondering why I decided to take on the challenge of running a marathon. Well, it was definitely an impulse decision, and yes, I'm feeling a bit scared. Training? I haven't even started yet. But despite all of this, I'm taking this endeavor seriously, and I couldn't be more excited. It's something I've always wanted to do, so I thought, "Why not now?" As a first step, I've done some research and come up with a training plan. After chatting with my friend, who's actually run a marathon (and doing extensive TikTok research, of course), here are some valuable lessons I've learned.
1) You Need a Training Plan
For me, having a clear and flexible training plan is an absolute game-changer. I'm thinking of using the Nike Run Club Half Marathon training plan with a few modifications. Listening to my body is a priority; if I need an extra rest day or can't complete a certain long run, that's okay. I'll give it another shot in a few days. Oh, and don't skip recovery runs! They're crucial in the training process. Lastly, consider throwing in some interval training runs now and then. They boost endurance and, trust me, time flies during those runs, especially if you're not a fan of long treadmill sessions.
2) Your shoes matter
Running is tough enough; you don't want sore feet because of ill-fitting shoes. I'm not saying you need to splurge on the priciest pair, but research before you buy. Most running stores have machines to analyze your feet, helping you choose the right support. Personally, I'm training in Hoka Clifton 8's and trying out the Hoka Clifton 9's.
3) Fuel is a Game Changer
For runs longer than 3-4 miles, fueling is crucial. It varies by person, so experiment with what works for you. Some take a gel or fuel before a run, others after hitting the four-mile mark. You're supposed to take one every 40-45 minutes after your first one, but it's individual. There are gels, gummies, waffle cookies, even candy or fruit snacks. It depends on your preference and what keeps you going. I've only tried waffle cookies (and loved them), but I want to try gels and gummies.
4) Eat. Before. Your. Run
Your body needs fuel before a run, so eat something high in easily digestible carbs. Oatmeal or a peanut butter toast with bananas and honey works wonders. Sometimes, I opt for a protein bagel with peanut butter and honey. A well-fueled body can take on those miles.
5) A Good Running Playlist
No doubt about it, a carefully curated playlist can be your best friend. Put together a selection of your favorite tracks that motivate and inspire you. Music has the power to keep you going when the going gets tough, so choose songs that make you want to move! My running playlist is on my Spotify, which is linked above!
In this marathon journey, I'm not just training my body; I'm learning to listen to it. I'm discovering the value of proper gear, nutrition, and preparation. And as I start on this adventure, I'll be sharing my experiences, from training hiccups to personal victories. Stay tuned for the highs and lows of my marathon experience!
